Trade show review: – Leipzig Book Fair 2017
Leipzig Book Fair 2017 – Despite visitor records, there was less demand on the hotel market
It is now much more than a just a trade fair. The Leipziger Buchmesse (Leipzig Book Fair), which has developed along with Leipzig’s Antiquariatsmesse (Antiquarian Book Fair), the “Manga-ComicCon” and the Leipzig Lesefest (the “Leipzig reads” reading festival) has now become one Spring Festival. And the concept seemed to have worked. Again and again, record numbers of exhibitors and visitors could be registered.
In fact, the Book Fair has been guaranteeing revenue for Leipzig’s hotel industry every year. For years, prices and demand for the fair period had been rising without any interruption.
And this year too, the continued growth in visitor numbers ought to have ensured full beds in Leipzig’s hotels in fact. Somehow, though, that has not been the case this time. Occupancy has fallen by almost five percent compared to last year. The losses could be observed in every star category. The increase in room rates (of over two percent) was also too little to offset the drop in RevPar. Three-star hotels even had to make do with lower room rates than last year. Only the four-star segment has been able to raise RevPar minimally (by just 0.3 percent), thanks to a very significant increase in average prices.
